FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything you need to know before you fly through the canopy

What should I wear for the tour?

We highly recommend wearing comfortable, sturdy walking shoes. The walk up to Neuschwanstein Castle involves a steep incline, and there are over 160 steps inside the castle itself. Additionally, the weather in the Bavarian Alps can change quickly, so it is best to dress in layers and bring a light rain jacket or umbrella, even in the summer.

What should I bring with me on the day trip?

Bring your camera or smartphone for stunning exterior photos, some local currency (Euros) for lunch, souvenirs, or the optional shuttle bus/horse-drawn carriage ride up the hill. Please note that large backpacks and bulky bags are not permitted inside the castle; if you must bring a bag, it should be small and kept in front of you during the interior tour.

Are pets allowed on the tour?

While pets are welcome to enjoy the beautiful outdoor scenery and walking trails around Hohenschwangau village with you, animals (with the exception of registered service dogs) are strictly prohibited inside Neuschwanstein Castle, Hohenschwangau Castle, and Linderhof Palace.

Can I take photographs inside the castle?

You are welcome to take as many photos as you like of the spectacular castle exteriors, the Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge), and the surrounding alpine scenery. However, photography and video recording are strictly prohibited inside Neuschwanstein Castle to preserve the historic interiors and keep the tours moving smoothly.

How strenuous is the visit to the castle?

Visitors should be prepared for a moderate amount of walking. The path from the ticket center in the village up to Neuschwanstein Castle is a steep uphill walk that takes about 30–40 minutes. While shuttle buses and horse-drawn carriages are available for an extra fee to take you most of the way up, there is still a 10-15 minute walk from the drop-off points to the castle entrance. Additionally, the castle interior tour involves climbing numerous stairs.
